EEUWHOEK VINEYARD

At Eeuwhoek, wine begins in the vineyard

 

The estate spans 2-hectares in the Flemish Ardennes, set along the river Scheldt and embedded in a deliberately restored ecosystem. The name is historic. It means “century-old place,” and for generations, this land was pasture and farmland. Today, it is being reshaped into a biodiverse and resilient landscape.
Before a single vine was planted, nearly two years were dedicated to rebuilding soil vitality in 2022 and 2023. Organic matter was increased and biological life stimulated so that the vineyard would begin with a living foundation rather than a reset field.
Today, the vines grow within a mosaic of habitats. Surrounding the vines are 1.5 hectares of newly planted forest with six indigenous tree varieties, mixed hedgerows, ponds with permanent aquatic life, wildflowers, a small orchard and a vegetable
garden. Each element contributes to the stability of the whole.
Farming decisions reflect that same long-term view. The soil is not tilled. Chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides are avoided. Intervention is limited to what can be sustained over time. Eeuwhoek introduces distinctive cool-climate varieties to Belgian soil.

Whites include Savagnin Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. Reds include Trousseau, Galotta, Divico, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. All vines are grafted onto rootstocks adapted to the site and selected for restrained growth. Multiple massale selections increase genetic diversity and long-term complexity.
What was once open agricultural land is becoming layered again. The intention is that each vintage will reflect not only grape variety and climate, but the depth of the ecosystem in which it grows.
